Elegant Web Design

Elegant Web Design

Elegant Web Design is a matter of taste, culture and perception. Based on western concepts of aesthetics we perceive simple, glossy,  graceful, clean and unencumbered styles as elegant.

How to give a site a touch of elegance?

Basically we can work with three elements: Color, Font and Layout.

Elegant Web Design Colors

There is no color which cannot be elegant. Elegance is less a matter of the color per se but of the number of colors used  and their relation. Elegant websites most often use few colors, often just one, plus black and white.

Elegant Fonts

Again every font can be elegant depending on how it is used. But in general, the most used fonts are not perceived as elegant, probably because they are used so often and everyone is familiar with their touch and feel.

A font such as Kozuka Gothic Pro is considered more elegant than Times New Roman.

Elegant Layout

An elegant layout is pleasant to look at, managing proportions and shapes according to rules of aesthetics.

The Most Important Element of Elegance

The most important element of elegance is in the execution. An elegant site will always be very well designed, details matter right down to the square pixel! Design elements such as images are of excellent quality, fonts are sharp and colors graceful, pleasant with a touch of dignity.

Sketches for a Web Design Workshop

To prepare a Web Design Workshop I have been playing with some elements to design a standard label, header or other banner for a ‘glossy’ site.

If you ever made a web site with the content in a center column and a different background for the body, or with a navigation bar not too tall, probably you experienced the problem of some elements not extending to the bottom of the browser window when the content height is lesser that the content area of the browser window.

The preliminary step is aim to maintain the site simple, understandable and translucent to attract visitors going in to your page and so bringing them closer to buying a product.
